Effects of Missing Teeth

As we mentioned above, tooth loss can take a serious toll on your self-esteem. Not only that, but it can make speaking, eating, and other everyday tasks extremely difficult, negatively impacting your quality of life in the process. That’s why we encourage patients to reach out to us, even if they’ve only lost a few back teeth that no one can see. Your oral health is our number one priority, and we want you to have a healthy, complete, and beautiful smile that helps you live your life to the fullest.
What Qualifies You for Dentures?

There are a few things we need to consider, including how many teeth you are missing, where they are located in your mouth, and the state of your oral health. Once we have all of this information, we can determine if you’re a candidate for dentures and, if you are, create a customized treatment plan.
Important note: If you have any existing oral health issues, like cavities or gum disease, these will need to be treated ahead of time. The good news is that we can add that onto the front-end of your treatment plan, making the process of restoring your healthy, complete smile considerably more convenient.
Alternative Tooth-Replacement Options

Of course, dentures are just one of the tooth-replacement solutions we offer. Depending on your unique dental needs and goals, we may recommend a dental bridge or implant instead. Here’s a little more information on each:
- Dental bridge – As the name suggests, dental bridges are designed to “bridge” the gap left by tooth loss. Traditionally, this is accomplished by placing dental crowns on the surrounding teeth and then securing custom-made, lifelike replacement teeth to them.
- Dental implant – This cutting-edge tooth-replacement solution is unique because it replaces both the root and crown. Not only does this provide unmatched stability, but it helps prevent jawbone loss. Plus, with proper care, they can last for 30+ years!
If you are struggling with tooth loss, and you think you’d benefit from getting dentures, don’t hesitate to give us a call! That way, we can learn more about your dental needs and schedule an appointment for you at our office.
Types of Dentures
There are multiple different types of dentures available to meet different needs. During your consultation, we will discuss which of the following options is ideal for you.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are made up of multiple replacement teeth and a gum-colored base. This type of denture fits between the existing teeth like a puzzle piece to fill any gaps. To remain in place, partial dentures are attached to the natural teeth with the help of either clips or brackets.
Full Dentures
Full dentures are made to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, either on the top or bottom. They remain in place with help from the natural shape and suction of your mouth. If you need additional support, denture adhesive is also available to provide stability. Traditional full dentures are removable, so you can take them out to clean them and while you sleep.
Implant Dentures
Implant dentures are supported by dental implants. The implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone. They help your replacement teeth to stay in place and they eliminate any need for adhesive or clasps. Dental implants also help to stimulate the jawbone, preventing the progression of bone resorption caused by tooth loss. The additional stability provided by implants allows patients to regain up to 70% or more of their natural chewing ability. Implant dentures are also made to last numerous decades, so you don’t need to worry about frequent repairs or replacements.
The Benefits of Dentures
Here are just some of the many benefits you can experience when you get dentures to replace your missing teeth:
- Allows for a more expansive diet
- Improved speaking ability
- Prevents surrounding teeth from moving
- Natural appearance
- Supports facial muscles
- Increases confidence
- Easy removal for cleaning
- Partially covered by most dental insurance
Denture FAQs
Will I Need to Have Teeth Pulled to Get Dentures?
Dentures are the tried-and-true solution for rebuilding smiles after tooth loss, so it may come as a surprise to learn that some patients require one or more extractions before proceeding with this service.
For example, if you have lost most but not all of your natural teeth, our team may need to extract the remaining teeth to create enough space for your dentures to fit and function properly. This allows them to form a firm suction against your connective tissues that they need to remain in place reliably.
However, not all patients will require additional procedures. Our Mansfield team will discuss your circumstances to devise a treatment plan suited to your unique situation.
What is the Average Age for Dentures?
Many people associate this service with aging because tooth loss tends to impact older adults more significantly. For example, estimates suggest that about 33% of adults aged 20 to 39 have lost at least one tooth, compared with nearly 66% of people aged 40 to 64.
But that doesn’t mean there is an age limit, restriction, or requirement for getting dentures. Whether tooth loss is caused by gum disease, severe decay, physical trauma, or other issues, it can potentially impact people at any point in their lives. As a result, many younger adults need dentures, too.
Can I Sleep with My Dentures In?
Are you wondering if it’s considered safe or acceptable to sleep with your dentures still in your mouth? While this might not cause immediate damage the first time it happens, it’s usually not recommended.
This is because your restoration relies on a tight bond with your gums to stay in place all day, which reduces blood circulation to the area. This, in turn, can cause sores or periodontal disease, making it uncomfortable to continue wearing your prosthetics.
Our team usually suggests removing them before bed to thoroughly brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear dish soap that won’t abrade the materials. Then, gently rinse them off before placing them in a glass with room-temperature water or a special soaking solution to kill germs while preserving their shape. This gives your mouth time to rest and recover while you sleep.
Is it Hard to Speak with Dentures?
You rely on two complete arches to formulate different sounds to articulate clearly, and some patients experience a temporary lisp, slur, or other challenges with their dentures when they’re new. This is partly because it can take your tongue and the other supporting muscles in your mouth about a month to fully acclimate to the dimensions and presence of your new teeth.
Thankfully, this can often be overcome with enough time and patience. You might speed up this transitional period by practicing reading out loud to yourself at home or recording yourself talking so that you can target challenging words or sounds, like “s” or “th”, until you feel more confident in your enunciation.
